I recently saw the news that the UofO plans to change Portland's historic Made in Oregon sign to read the University of Oregon. I find this news incredibly disheartening. It makes me sad. Why? To me, this sign is a landmark for all Oregonians. It's unique and adds character to our cityscape. I enjoy seeing it everytime I come into downtown and it makes me smile when they add the red nose to the deer every December. Out of town visitors always love it. And, I want this to be around for Cal to enjoy. I guess with the proposed change, for me, it will just become another commerical billboard - a dime a dozen along our freeways. I'm tired of everything being so commercialized. So, in the heat of passion, this morning I wrote the city's historic landmark planners who will review the UofO's proposal, and asked them to reject it. I'm rallying support and for those who wish to do the same, their email addresses are below.
