In December, I started a new tradition for Cal’s and Ben’s birthdays: a present scavenger hunt. Here’s how it went….
I wrote out two clues and attached the first to a Spiderman helium balloon. Knowing Cal would appear at some time during the night in our bedroom, I let the balloon fly after he had gone to sleep, so he would see it first thing when he woke up. Sure enough, he saw it, pointed and said in this little amazed voice, “Mommy! There’s a balloon right there!” Such a great reaction and memory I’ll keep. I pointed out the clue attached and we read it together. (Honestly, I think the balloon would have been enough by how excited he was…)
It pointed us to the second clue, which was attached to his chair at the kitchen table. There, I had placed a doughnut birthday treat and a second, smaller Batman balloon.
The last stop was the bathtub, where I had hidden his wrapped gift for him to open.
Cal thought his “treasure hunt” with Dad and Mom was so fun – but I think I had more fun thinking it up and watching him find the clues and little prizes that I thought were just right for him. I figured he’d love getting his present first thing (Legos) and be able to enjoy playing with it all day. I was right, but hope as he gets older, he’ll love the process just as much as his gifts.
